Part-time Paid Position Available

Our website received the following request:

“My name is Deborah Boudreau. I am the Education Director at The Ward Melville Heritage Organization located in Stony Brook, Long Island. We are a non-profit whose mission is to preserve historic properties including a 300-year-old water-powered grist mill. Given a carpenter’s mechanical knowledge and understanding of how various parts work and fit together, I am reaching out on the happen-chance you may know of someone who would be interested in a per-diem position as a miller (giving tours a few Saturday or Sundays a month). He/she would need to be able to learn, understand and ultimately explain the mechanical operation of the mill (including its belt and gears) for the visiting public. Would you perhaps know of someone who may be interested in this? It would be great for a retired person or a history-minded carpenter who is enthusiastic to learn about historic structures and early industry. It is a paid position and there would be training from our veteran millers.”

Here are more particulars:

Looking for a per-diem employee qualified to operate and present a historic grist mill tours on a weekly basis (once a weekend for 4-5 hours). The perfect candidate is someone who:

– is qualified to understand the mechanical operation of the historic water-powered grist mill including its belts and gears
– is comfortable speaking and presenting the technical details of the mill’s operation, as well its history to the public
– is comfortable working with others (millers supervises volunteers in the country store).
– Will be able to detect issues or problems in the functioning of the mill’s gear mechanisms

The successful candidate will undergo a training period under the apprenticeship of current miller as well as training in the history of the property by educational staff.

Please note this position contains an opportunity for growth including additional hours for the presentation of educational programs to school groups.
