I actually saw the video the estimable Mr. Nubs (his real name is James Hamilton) alluded to a couple of days ago, but didn’t think to post it here, I was actually shocked when I saw it. Then this came out. FWIW,I reviewed Stumpy Nubs in the June issue of the Woodrack. It’s so dangerous, I’m assuming (probably wrongly) that the it’s a video shot to highlight dangerous behavior, because what you will see is insane. I think Stumpy Nubs thought the same.

Thanks Daryl, it always helps to be reminded to think the cut though first. Speed and inattention leads to carelessness as well and he talked about knots, my case in point. I wrote in the Woodrack many years ago (mid-late 90’s?) about my accident on the day of a major snowstorm. It took a while to get to the hospital, my hand packed in ice, all the roads were closed. Luckily the surgeons were able to sew the skin back on my fingers and all these years later it still effects me at times. I hit a hidden knot while using my shaper and even though I had a fence in place as well as a hood over the blade it pulled my hand into the spinning bit, a broken piece of wood jammed it to a stop before it took the rest of my fingers off. The bit flayed the skin off of two of my fingers and put a deep cut in another. I sat in the emergency room with no less than 4 men that had the same type of injury. The DR walked up to me and asked ” another snowblower?”…

Ben, I know, absolutely, I’m guilty of it as well. If people are not taught how to use a tool safely they can get seriously hurt as well. I watched three workers putting down a solid wood floor at a friends private house, only one of them knew what he was doing, the other two just cut the wood to size and brought in equipment. The “cutters” had a portable table saw and they took the fence off for a cut that should have been made with a jigsaw. Most of the time the saw was in use the fence was off, just the blade spinning. The saw was making noises and wood smoke was rising. I told the guy at minimum, he was going to lose his fingers, he paid no attention. I left and they continued.
