My table saw is located in the garage. Over the years, I have done much to protect it and other co-located equipment from the ravages of rust. Several times annually, I scour the saw’s table with WD-40 and then apply a coat of Renaissance Wax. Also, a magnetic cover is on the tabletop at all times when it is not in use.

Now to the strange happening –

I had to use the saw this morning. Today was extremely humid and wet from overnight rain. When the magnetic cover was removed, I WATCHED rust form on the tabletop! The oxidation started within about ten minutes after exposure. Moisture also quickly formed. In over sixty-five years of working with machinery, I have NEVER seen rust form so soon as to be observable.

    Has anyone observed similar phenomena?

Educated guess the cast iron table had moisture on it and taking the cover off exposed the table top to oxygen giving Fe2O3 or rust.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I will bet you are on the right path. The amazing thing was the rapidity of the process.

This book is a terrific read (well it was for me anyway). You might want to consider using Boeshield, or perhaps Metalglanz (made by Felder). Or perhaps such chemical tricks only works on people named Michael.

Thanks for the repartee and advice. Not to sound overly cranky, but the URL provided by Mr. R. reflects a price that is 50% greater than Amazon’s. Yay for Jeff Bezos. Srsly, thank you all.

At the moment, it’s Barnes and Noble that is at the forefront of the independent bookstore. Mr. Bezos enough of my business; we need brick and mortar, not only so we can look through actual pages, but because people have to actually build those stores. So my link was deliberate. However, if you really want to feed the hungry giant…….
