Well, fellows, though I tend to agree that these devices may seem like overkill or a waste, they are far from new. Such devices for hand saws have been around for many, many years. Some were user made and added on by the craftsman. Later, it became a manufactured item. There was obviously a need for such a device as is made evident in several older texts as well as newer hand-tool user instructions. I’m sure if we were to use our saws everyday for hours we would come across a definite need for such a depth stop. For our occasional use, however, we find it silly much like the need for a toothing plane. 🙂

At least I didn’t say that oak was more green.

I was thinking more along the lines of telepathy but Reiki would work. I guess you could try smelling it. There is a distinct aroma to oak particularly when you burn it with your saw blade. But in a larger picture, the differences become more obvious. Ash’s pores are not as large and open as you might find in oak. If the board is not stained, it’s even easier to tell. Ash is more creamy looking. At least that’s my experience.

Nice stuff, Roger. Thanks for sharing. Even in Russian, a picture says a thousand words. No need to translate.

I was at the cabinetmakers meeting Tuesday night and at least 2 or 3 guys said they wanted to come. I asked them to post here, but I doubt they will. I would add that to your tally.
