Bill, when you make something as small as a jewelry box there is no need for dovetails, except for decoration. A rabbet joint will work just as well, there’s more than a few other choices of joinery as well. New router bits give you a load of choices although you can make plenty of joints with hand tools. It depends on the time you want to spend making them and what you want it to look like in the end. I use dovetails because, well, it looks good. For me, with a jewelry box, the smaller the pins and tails, the better. Smaller dovetails doesn’t necessarily mean stronger but strength is not what your looking for, it’s the racking you’re trying to prevent. If the bottom of the drawer is nailed to the front, sides and back it prevents racking. It makes the drawer stronger but it looks horrible. Large drawers full of clothes or heavy objects need dovetails or some kind of joinery (dowels, finger joints are 2 other choices) that will put up with the stresses of opening and closing (slamming) full of a heavy weight. Tails first, always!!!

Rick, I missed it but I’ll check it out when I get a chance. Thanks for the info, Charlie

I’ve turned pens from wood that I only dry for a month or so. I just cut it into oversized blanks and let it sit. I have used green wood that’s only dried for a week or so but the wood tends to split more often, not all the time but certainly more often than the dried wood. If it makes it through to the finishing process it’ll be okay. I guess the thinness of the walls, the spinning on the lathe and the heat of the finish and waxing dries it out completely.

Ben, doing it is the only way to learn. Glad it worked out..

I know it can be done but it may stink up the microwave for a while. If you’ll be doing it a lot buy a cheap microwave…

Rob, it looks like you’ve been turning 24 hours a day! Really, the projects look great. Keep turning,,, over and over and over again and then suddenly it starts to click. You realize that you are beginning to pick up certain tools and work without even thinking about it. Keep em coming..Charlie

I am in the process of changing mine over slowly as well. My last 8′ fluorescent bulb blew out yesterday. Now that I know I can replace it with LED’s without changing the fixture, I’m going for that as well. Thanks for the offer Rob and thanks for the info Bill…

Daryl, the finish is thin and it doesn’t matter. I put a coat of shellac inside but not wax. Shellac and wax on the outside.I always wax the runners as well, at least 2 coats..Haven’t had a problem with it yet.
